Pacquiao vs Rios on November 23, 2013 Confirmed. Pacquiao vs Rios fight is now confirmed to be on November 23, 2013 at Venetian, Macau, China and will be aired via HBO Pay per View.
After almost a year after a defeat from Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao now suffered from a great challenge in his boxing career. Prior to the defeat he had against Marquez, he was also defeated from their fight against Timothy Bradley last June 9 last year. Even though everybody believes that it was an error or a mistake from the judges.
So what is the big challenge that Manny Pacquiao currently facing? It is how to cover up the losses he had the previous year. He has to build up again the reputation he lost from those fights, though his boxing fans are with him still, but he has to prove to them that he deserve to be called as pound for pound king title.
As we all know, everybody wants to see the so called “mega fight” between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao, but this is very far to happen. It is because from the latest fight of Mayweather which was against Guerrero last May 4, 2013, it just proves that nobody can beat him. On the other hand, Manny Pacquiao was defeated by Marquez and Bradley who Mayweather both defeated. So it’s ironic if Mayweather vs Pacquiao will happen today. That is the reason why Manny Pacquiao has to be building his reputation again and fight for bigger names in the future and target would be Mayweather.
Manny Pacquiao who is 8 division world champion with a current record of 54 – 5 – 2, in which 38 are via knockouts decided to fight Brandon Rios who currently holds a record of 31 – 1 – 1, 23 of which are via knockouts.
However, this fight is against to all we are expecting that the fight will be in USA, because the fight will be at China. The so called mini Las Vegas, Venetian in Macau, is the place that was chosen for Pacquiao vs Rios fight.
But because of the twelve hour difference, the actual fight will be on November 24, 2013, Sunday, China time and it will be the same time as the usual HBO pay per view will be aired so that would be 9PM EST / 6PM PST on Saturday night in United States.
There are two running opponents to fight for Manny Pacquiao, they are Rios and Alvarado but Pacquiao team feels that fighting Rios will be more exciting.
We have to remember that this is the first fight after the deadly sixth round knockout he had from Marquez last December 2012. So, this is a big challenge for him, considering Rios is not a very big name as he is in the boxing field.
Koncz, the adviser of Manny Pacquiao, said that if he will lose again against Rios this November, then this may be the right time for Manny to think if he will leave the boxing career. We are not sure if what Manny Pacquiao is focusing and doing right now, as we all know that he is also a politician in Philippines, he also runs several businesses in their hometown. These might be the reason that he can’t concentrate in his training for his upcoming fights, but nobody can tell. So for all boxing fans out there, let’s support their fight this November, you can buy Pacquiao vs Rios tickets from us and watch the Pacquiao vs Rios live streaming from your home on the fight night.
Crash Course: Pacquiao-Rios
On Saturday, Manny Pacquiao — No. 3 in SI.com’s latest pound-for-pound list — will take on Brandon Rios for a minor welterweight title at The Venetian’s Cotai Arena in Macau, China. The fight will be televised by HBO Pay Per View, for a suggested price of $59.95.
Pacquiao, 34, a former eight division champion, is coming off his second straight defeat. Last December, Pacquiao was knocked out in the sixth round by Juan Manuel Marquez in the fourth fight of an epic rivalry. One of the top draws in boxing, Pacquiao will earn a guaranteed $18 million for this fight with an upside that could drive his purse north of $30 million.
Rios, 27, a former junior welterweight champion, is moving up to 147-pounds for the first time. An entertaining brawler, Rios is coming off a narrow decision defeat to Mike Alvarado, who Rios defeated by knockout in 2012. Rios will earn $4 million for this fight.
Background
Despite back-to-back losses — including a questionable decision defeat to Tim Bradley last year — Pacquiao remains one of boxing’s few remaining superstars. Possessing superior power, speed and accuracy, Pacquiao blazed a trail of dominance from 2008 to 2010, when he stopped Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto. However, lackluster wins over Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Marquez in ’11 and an uninspired performance against Bradley in ’12 have been signs that Pacquiao has begun to decline. Last December, Pacquiao met Marquez in the fourth installment of a historic rivalry. It was a competitive fight early, with both Pacquiao and Marquez scoring knockdowns in the first five rounds. Then came the sixth, when Pacquiao, leading on all three judges scorecards, rushed into a picture-perfect Marquez right hand. The shot knocked him out, creating the first clear cut finish between the two fighters. Afterwards, on the advice of his trainer, Freddie Roach, Pacquiao took 11 months off, the longest layoff of his career. Rios is not considered one of boxing’s most skilled fighters, but he is one of its most entertaining. A come forward brawler carved from the mold of the late Arturo Gatti, Rios loves a good fight. He burst on the national scene in 2011, when he knocked out veteran Miguel Acosta for a 135-pound title. Rios moved up to 140-pounds in 2012 to stop Alvarado and claim a 140-pound title. He is not the most disciplined fighter; Rios has missed weight in two of his last four fights, costing him his lightweight title.
While Rios and Pacquiao have been respectful of each other, the tension between their camps has been palpable. Rios is trained by Robert Garcia, who was caught on film in 2010 laughing while two of his fighters, Rios and Antonio Margarito, mocked the symptoms of Roach’s Parkinson’s disease, and Alex Ariza, Pacquiao’s former strength and conditioning coach who was fired by Roach in August. On Tuesday, a scuffle broke out between Roach and members of Rios’s team at an open workout. During the expletive-laced melee, Ariza could be heard mocking Roach’s problems with Parkinson’s, including referring to Roach as a “stuttering prick.”

Matchup
Rios isn’t complicated: He comes straight forward and wears opponents down. Though he lacks one-punch power, Rios scores knockouts in the later rounds. Four of his last five wins have come by knockout, three of which came in the fifth round or later. He loves fighting on the inside, professing that his ideal fight is when it becomes a test of wills. Rios has an excellent chin — he has been knocked down just once as a professional — and seems to gain momentum when the fight gets more physical. He won’t avoid many punches, but he won’t miss an opportunity to throw many, either.
Pacquiao has slowed down considerably the last few years. Though still fast with cutting power, Pacquiao no longer relentlessly pursues opponents for entire rounds. Lately, he has fought in bursts and has not knocked an opponent out since 2009. He is still dangerous, though not nearly as dangerous as he used to be.
And then there is the question of how Pacquiao will bounce back after last year’s devastating knockout. Over the last few months, Pacquiao and his team have gone to great lengths to assure the public that Pacquiao has moved on from the loss. But history suggests that knockouts like that can have lingering effects, and if Pacquiao is hesitant or unsure of himself, Rios will be right there to take advantage.
The Odds
According to Las Vegas betting website Bovada.lv, Pacquiao is a heavy favorite at -500. Rios is the underdog at +350.
Prediction
Is Pacquiao the same fighter he was before getting knocked out by Marquez? This is the fight’s biggest question. If Pacquiao is fully recovered, he rolls. Rios was handpicked because he isn’t difficult to hit, lacks crushing power and is moving up in weight. A sharp Pacquiao will carve Rios up, battering him with flurries that Rios isn’t fast enough to counter. But what if Pacquiao has lost a step? Then he could be in trouble. Rios may not be able to floor Pacquiao like Marquez did, but he can get a stoppage by applying relentless pressure. For now, you have to give Pacquiao the benefit of the doubt. He may not be the Pacquiao of 2009, but he is still better than Rios. Pacquiao by unanimous decision.

After an eventful week, both Pacquiao and Rios made weight for the fight. The weigh-in took place at 7:30 a.m. in Macau to accommodate American media and live TV. Pacquiao weighed in at 145 pounds even; Rios at 146.5 pounds. On stage, the pair were calm and respectful with each other. Rios received boos, and after he stepped off the scale, he egged on the crowd’s catcalls.
But Rios can’t keep his famous mouth quiet for long, calling out Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach for trash talking him about making weight. “
“This message goes out to Freddie Roach who said I’m a bum, I’m a fat loser and I can never make weight — guess what, I made weight, I feel great,” Rios said.

“When you doubt me you make me stronger. (They) are worried, I’m not worried, I feel confident.”
Roach laughed off the comment, saying Rios struggled to make it even though he had now moved up two weight divisions in three fights. “If he can’t make 147 he’s a joke,” Roach said. “He almost couldn’t make 135 or 140 and even at 147 he struggled every day, he had plastics on. This is a world title fight, you make weight.”
The comments followed a week in which the Rios and Pacquiao camps got into an ugly exchange of words at the training facility in Macau where they are sharing ring time. After Thursday’s news conference, Rios had the facilities booked from 9 to 11 p.m.; Pacquiao had the following two hours.
Rios and his team started their session due to a delay wrapping up their news conference. When Roach arrived, he got hot with Rios trainer Robert Garcia for overstaying their assigned time. It escalated into an ugly shouting match, joined with gusto by Rios’ strength coach Alex Ariza who used to work with Roach and Pacquiao.

Ariza made fun of Roach’s Parkinson’s disease and in the scuffle, kicked Roach in the chest before security separated everyone. Roach fired off some coarse comments of his own; Garcia called him a racist. “Now it’s personal, It was all caught on video by multiple media including HBO. Garcia later apologized for his camp’s behavior. Be aware before opening the video link here that the language is raw and uncensored, not for the kiddies.
It has been two years since Manny Pacquiao won a fight, and 11 months since his shocking knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez. Brandon Rios is also coming off a loss, a unanimous decision to Mike Alvarado, the first of his career.
Both fighters feel they have a lot to prove. Pacquiao not only wants to get his career back on track, he has been given extra motivation by the devastation suffered in his native Philippines following Hurricane Haiyan. Pacquiao had dedicated the fight to his country.
An elected Congressman from his home province of Sarangani, Pacquiao told Associated Press “I really want to visit the area and personally do what I can to help our countrymen who have suffered so much in this terrible tragedy, but I’m in deep training for a crucial fight so I regret I cannot go,” he said to the Associated Press.
Rios is a crowd-pleasing fighter who loves to bring the action. He likes to hit, and he likes getting hit. Rios has proved he can take tremendous punishment while dishing it out. He isn’t afraid of anyone. He wants to show the world he’s the real deal and deserves to be in the ring with one of the world’s all-time greatest boxers and a future Hall of Famer.

Manny Pacquiao vs Brandon Rios Odds and Betting Preview
Manny (The Pac Man) Pacquiao is set to take on Brandon Rios at the Cotai Arena in Macao. Pacquiao, who is 1.2 with Ladbrokes to win the fight, is desperate to get a win on the cards after losing two consecutive fights for the first time in his almost 20 year career.
The challenger, Brandon Rios is a 27 year old Texan, who lost his rematch with the mighty Mike Alvarado earlier in the year. Both fighters are going to be looking to get back to winning ways and the fight is likely to be hard fought. Rios goes into the fight as the outsider at 5.00 with bet365.
Whilst that might seem a tough book to bet into, as boxing always does, Pacquiao looks desperately short at 1.2 to win this. Pacquiao is 34 now and battle hardened to say the least, with over 60 fights to his name now, and hasn’t fought for nearly a year. The Roach camp are shouting loud but they will be worried behind their cool facade.
Brandon Rios isn’t necessarily quite the cannon fodder that the bookies’ prices would suggest. The young welterweight has had 31 fights and only lost one of them. Whilst in U.S. Boxing rising through the ranks is something which can often take time, his recent match up with Alvarado was eye catching and he clearly has punching power.
That punching power bodes well for Rios, three out of five of Pacquiao’s losses have come by way of knockout and J M Marquez’s most recent triumph in December of last year will be seared on the minds of both boxers.
Rios stands close to no chance of going the distance with Pacquiao and a knock out looks very much on the cards. Rios has been somewhat unruly in the build up to the fight, mirroring the pathetic behaviour of George Groves in the build up to his UK world title clash with Carl Froch this Saturday. Roach came out on Thursday saying that Pacquiao wouldn’t accept such disrespect and suggested the fight would likely go less than four rounds before Rios was KO’d.
Paddy Power are a stand out 17.00 for the Manny to win in the 4th round and it could be a shrewd bet as high class boxers do like to deliver on their promises. We saw this with David Haye in his world title defence against Audley Harrison. At 17.00 it seems like a potentially decent punt.
The only worry with KO betting is that both boxers enter the fight off the back of losses. This often leads to careful fighting and there is a chance that there might be a bit of dancing around the ring. However I am going to take the liberty of suggesting that this will not be the case. If Pacquiao is going to continue fighting then he needs to assert his dominance over Rios, particularly if he is going to get the chance at another title shot. Meanwhile, when fighting a boxer of the stature of Pacquiao there is very little to lose and to become the man that toppled the mighty M.P would be quite an accolade.
The fight therefore is likely to be a fierce clash. As a boxing fan I would love to see the great Pacquiao pick up another victory, however at 1.2 I really cannot be backing that. I would much rather have Rios to win by K.O at 7.5 with bet365.
My view is that the boxers that fight too long end up going down and they go down hard. There is value to be had backing opponents at this point and I think the sensible money will be on Rios. Pacquiao has his eye on a political career and hasn’t fought for a year. Rios is 27, hungry and eager to show the world what he is made of.
All I can say is do not back Pacquiao at 1.2 to win the fight. My recommendation would be to back Rios, if you’re a betting man then back him to win by K.O and if you can’t stomach that (because it would be a very sad thing to watch) then back Rios to win at 5.00 with bet365.
I personally will be having a saver on Manny to do the job in the fourth at 17.00 with Paddy Power but that is only because I love him. He is the greatest boxer I have ever watched. He has risen through the weights and done it with class. He never boxed Mayweather but Pacquiao is not to blame for that.
The value at present is with Rios. Back him and back him hard, he is value to win this and value is something you don’t come by often in boxing. Unless you are Donn King that is.
2 point win: Rios to win by K.O at 7.5 with bet365
Manny Pacquiao vs Brandon Rios: Where to Watch Live, Preview and Predictions
Manny Pacquiao looks to get his career back on track when he faces Brandon Rios on 23 November at the Cotal Arena in Macau, China.
Where to Watch Live
The fight can be seen live on subscription channel BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch 546) from 1.30am BST on Sunday 24 November. BoxNation will donate £2 from every new subscription this week to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s appeal for victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan.
Overview
Pacquiao enters this contest on the back of a brutal knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2012. It was his second consecutive defeat after a controversial points loss to Timothy Bradley and led to talk that he should walk away from the sport some 18 years after his professional debut back in January 1995.
Some believe the Filipino legend has lost his sharpness and even his own trainer, Freddie Roach, has stated that an underwhelming performance against Rios would lead him to advise Pacquiao to walk away from the fight game.
But the 34-year-old truly believes that he can still be a major force in a hugely competitive welterweight division and will undoubtedly still dream of a showdown with long-time rival Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Roach has stated that Pacquiao still has the “hunger” to be a champion and has even predicted that Rios will not be able to make it past the fourth round.
Pacquaio’s opponent is also entering the ring on the back of a loss, the first of his career, in what was a fight-of-the-year contender against Mike Alvarado. The 27-yearo-old’s aggressive, come-forward, style makes him an exciting fighter to watch and he earned plenty of fans despite losing to his fellow American in March.
Rios has never shared a ring with a fighter on the same level as Pacquiao but he is confident that he will be able to wear down his naturally smaller opponent. The California resident boasts an impressive 70% knockout ratio and believes he has witnessed a severe decline in Pacquiao’s skills.
The build-up to the fight has however been as much about the trainers as it has been the fighters. Roach has consistently clashed with Robert Garcia, with the pair almost coming to blows just days ago in front of the world’s press.
Roach was accused of making racial slurs against the Rios camp who responded nastily when Alex Ariza, who is the former conditioning coach of Pacquiao and now works with Rios, aimed a kick at the trainer and mocked the fact that he suffers from Parkinson’s.
All the spice has led to a hugely anticipated bout that will either reaffirm Pacquaio’s status as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, or will prove that Rios is a genuine threat to the best welterweights in the world.
Prediction
While the memory of Pacquiao lying flat out after being caught by a vicious shot from Marquez still looms large in the memory there can be little doubt that he has the far more impressive resume and should overcome Rios. The eight-division world champion still looked sharp in his last fight and should have the power to stop his younger opponent.
Rios is a pressure fighter and may well struggle when Pacquiao manages to find his timing as he will be walking onto shots. While he may cause the Filipino problems in the early few rounds, constant punishment will take its toll and a stoppage in the second half of the fight may well be there for the taking.

Had you asked me what to expect from the weigh-ins a week ago, I would have said they were likely to be pretty uneventful. Pacquiao and Rios have been very chummy throughout the extended press build to the fight, with their photos looking more like buddies out on the town than upcoming opponents. But that changed this week when Pacquiao head trainer Freddie Roach got into a physical altercation with Rios’s camp, led by Alex Ariza. It was an intense moment that has added a big question mark to this promotional event. It will be interesting to see how each camp responds at this event.

Pacquiao (vs. Rios live)was born the fourth of six siblings on Dec. 17, 1978 in the town of Kibawae, in the Bukidnon province of the Philippines. Pacquiao ran away from home as a child, leaving the day he discovered life had gotten so desperate that his father had actually eaten the family dog. He lived off the streets, often slept in a cardboard box, and sold doughnuts for a nickel to survive. As a 14-year-old, Pacquiao moved to Manila and continued his fight out of poverty by turning to boxing. He had a solid amateur career, winning 60 of 64 fights. After the death of a close friend and fellow boxer, Pacquiao, at 16, still under 5 feet tall and several pounds under even the lightest weight permitted to compete as a professional, turned pro anyway. To make his 105-pound debut, Pacquiao later confessed to hiding weights in his pockets when he stepped on the scales. Nearly 10 years later, Pacquiao finally arrived in America. On Nov. 15, 2003, he knocked out future hall of famer Marco Antonio Barrera in the 11th round to begin one of the most mythic decades in the history of boxing. Maybe if Pacquiao either dies or suffers permanent damage in the ring, fighting for his people, perhaps he’ll end up even more bankable. Before all this is done, martyrdom might be the most convenient justification for the sum of far too many foul parts that surround Pacquiao’s lasting legacy.
““The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.”” — Ernest Hemingway
Despite earning nearly $200 million during his brilliant career, Pacquiao always hemorrhaged money. In his next 20 fights, Pacquiao accumulated 10 world titles and became the first man ever to do so in an unprecedented eight weight divisions, from light-flyweight to junior-middleweight. He knocked out Mexican legend Erik Morales twice, avenged a draw against Marquez with two subsequent victories, retired Oscar De La Hoya on his stool, pulverized Ricky Hatton in two rounds, moved up in weight even further to batter Miguel Cotto into submission, sent Antonio Margarito to the hospital with a fractured orbital bone, then dispatched Shane Mosley and Marquez once more. The remarkable run finally ended with a highly controversial loss against Timothy Bradley in the summer of 2012.
Gary Andrew Poole’s 2010 biography, “Pacman,” laid out how Pacquiao’s contracts were split: After his manager’s took their 20-percent cut, his trainer Freddie Roach took 10 percent, strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza shaved off a few more points. There were also training camp expenses, tax bills in the U.S. and the Philippines, and his boundless, ever-growing entourage, all guzzling funds. According to a 2009 New York Times article by Greg Bishop, “Team Pacquiao has perfected the art of dysfunction. The entourage consists of trainers, assistants to the trainers, advisers, assistants to the advisers, cooks, dishwashers, car washers, publicists, gofers and security.” For each fight, Pacquiao also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars flying his entourage to Las Vegas, buying hundreds of tickets, covering hotel rooms, and providing spending money. In the Times article, Michael Koncz, singled out Pacquiao’s Achilles’ heel: “The downfall of Pacquiao, if there is one, will be his kindness and generosity. At some point, I fear that’s going to catch up to him.” Beyond Pacquiao’s generosity, he reportedly squandered millions from gambling. That doesn’t even account for his fleet of cars and extensive property holdings, including houses, condos, apartments and such an intense desire to give his money away to the poor he had to hire people simply charged with the responsibility to apologize and prevent him from throwing money at all the open hands spread out before him.
I flew out to Houston to interview George Foreman, one of boxing’s rare success stories. What was Big George’s secret? After the success of his signature grill (the Times reported in 1999 that the George Foreman Grill had already earned him in excess of $150 million) and a second reign as heavyweight champion, Foreman is reportedly now worth nearly a quarter billion dollars. Yet, before we could start the interview, with a note of gentle caution, George’s son, George V, asked me to avoid any slippery questions with dates and names. “His head’s fine,” George V smiled reassuringly, “Pop’s just getting a little older is all.”

“Boxing is the number one sport in every man’s mind,” George smiled. “Being champion of the world meant a lot to me. For a short period. You’re up. You’re famous. You’re rich. Then you lose,” Foreman laughed. “You lose a boxing match and you crawl into a hole and there’s hardly anything that can get you out of that hole. Then you’re on the verge of ‘I don’t care anything about life.’ I know what success is and failure is and success was short lived. Some of us had all kinds of riches, but that didn’t mean we found any kind of happiness. There’s a loneliness to being the heavyweight champion.”
George was right. It was a poor man’s game. Boxing has no middle class. You’re either a millionaire or you need a second job. Whatever amount a fighter signs to fight for, no contract in sports bleeds more money in all directions faster than boxing. Don King used to ask many of his fighters to sign blank contracts. And they signed their lives away. Those same fighters would happily accept King’s offer of $10,000 in cash up front against a million dollars next week. Most boxers have to keep going until the bones have been picked dry. Then, when they have nothing left, no place to go, they simply go back to where they came, with nothing.
““Martin Luther King took us to the mountain top: I want to take us to the bank. I’m not fighting the Civil War, I’m fighting the poverty war.”” — Don King
It’s not an accident Donald Trump names everything after himself. It betrays a central fact about the fundamental emptiness of the legacy that Trump will leave behind. Who else would ever name anything after him? Imagine how you’d feel about a society that did. What exactly has Trump achieved or owned that stands a chance of inspiring future generations to attach his name to anything? This is because outside of Trump’s net financial worth, his ultimate value inspires nothing.
It’s no different for fighters. The value of a boxer’s legacy simply isn’t determined by what he has; the greats are remembered for what they give of themselves.
This is the central difference between Pacquiao and Mayweather. No matter how much Mayweather out-earns Pacquiao financially, he can never buy his way out of the fact no great champion in history has been more willing to stink out a fight. Mayweather’s legacy will be that he was one of the most exciting fighters in the history of boxing until he stepped into the ring. And none of Pacquiao’s well-documented personal failings can erase how much of his life he risked and ultimately left behind inside the ropes. The easiest way to score a fight, as HBO announcer Max Kellerman once pointed out, is just to ask, “Who would I rather be?”
Pacquiao and Mayweather should have fought a trilogy by now, their battles as famous as those between Frazier and Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler. For the general sports fan, no fight boxing has offered since Tyson left the sport has escaped the shadow of Pacquiao and Mayweather facing each other. For the boxing public, in many ways their respective careers seem like opposite sides of Tyson’s. Pacquiao’s ruthless style reminds us more than anyone else of Tyson pre-prison, and Mayweather’s promotional genius owes a great debt to Tyson post-prison.
“Who knows? You saw what happened to Pacquiao after Marquez laid him out. Freddie Roach thought he was dead. He wasn’t dead, but they’ll still bleed him dry. To come back from that kind of loss and fight against a young, tough kid like [Brandon] Rios? That’s a very precarious move right there. Not for anybody making it happen, of course, but for Manny. But then he can never stop fighting. They never can. Too many bills and expenses. The lifestyle destroys them as much as any opponent. And everybody with their hand in Pacquiao’s pocket knows he can’t escape. You know, for them, the more in debt the better. He has to keep going.”

Could it still happen? Could the two still fight? And, more importantly, should it still happen? Mayweather’s ultimate victory over his nemesis is that for the time being, he no longer needs the fight. Mayweather seems to be coasting his way toward career earnings of half a billion dollars before his contract with Showtime is up, but he should keep in mind how quickly Tyson blew through even more money than Mayweather has earned. Pacquiao, on the other hand, has a lot more uncertainty with his future and innumerably more bills to cover in his present.
Pacquiao’s upcoming fight on Nov. 24, just before his 35th birthday, against Brandon Rios, only 27, offers some interesting parallels to the champions of the past. Joe Louis was 37 when he fought Rocky Marciano. Muhammad Ali was a couple years younger when he went up against George Foreman, and a year older when he fought Leon Spinks. Mike Tyson was a year older against Lennox Lewis. Roy Jones Jr. was the same age as Pacquiao when his career took a new, sad course after Antonio Tarver pulverized him in the second round of their rematch. “You got any excuses for tonight, Roy?” Tarver famously answered the referee’s query about any questions before the fight. Six minutes later a groggy Roy had a doctor’s flashlight in his eyes seeing whether he needed to go the hospital.
““To see a man beaten not by a better opponent but by himself is a tragedy.”” — Cus D’Amato
Ten minutes after I first met Freddie Roach in Hollywood in March of 2010, he matter-of-factly mentioned that Pacquiao was broke. Every boxing writer learns quickly that Roach loves to toss out juicy quotes, usually followed by a giggle and a, “Hey, but don’t be an asshole and report that.” I wasn’t even there covering or asking about Pacquiao. But this quote? This was Pacquiao when all Floyd Mayweather could do to explain his dominance was hurl steroid accusations. I thought, even hoped, I’d misheard him. Given the toll boxing took on Roach’s own health (he had lived with Parkinson’s syndrome for many years at that point), it’s not always easy to hear his thin voice over the racket in the gym. I thought maybe he’d referenced a prior injury Pacquiao had had — his hand or a rib was “broke” — but by Roach’s sad expression, I knew I’d heard him correctly. Arguably the greatest fighter of the era, still at the top of his game, was already broke.
Arguably the greatest fighter of the era, still at the top of his game, was already broke.
Virgil Hill, former WBA light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion, walked into the gym. Nearly 50 years old, he still looked good. Then Roach said Virgil was training for a comeback himself. “Is he broke too?” I asked. Why else would he still be trying to fight? Roach shrugged his shoulders.
Yet for all the parallels between Pacquiao and the ghosts of legendary past boxing champions in the ring, the similarities may be infinitely more corrosive outside the ring. Louis, still mired in debt over back taxes, spent the end of his life in a cowboy hat, coked out of his head, working as a greeter in front of Caesar’s Palace. Sonny Liston died nearby, alone, a week’s worth of newspapers and sour milk piled up outside the door. Ali’s career has left the “Louisville Lip” barely able to mumble out a discernable word. In Philly, Joe Frazier spent his last days sleeping out of the office of his gym. Leon Spinks cleaned toilets at the YMCA after his fighting days were over. Iran Barkley was discovered homeless, sleeping the nights away on a New York subway train. While an aging, rumored to be broke, Roy Jones Jr. flew to distant corners of the globe to get knocked out for whatever money his name could offer, Arturo Gatti was found dead hanging from his wife’s purse strap. Tyson, finally having salvaged some vestige of financial solvency and domestic happiness for the first time since declaring bankruptcy after blowing well over $300 million in his fighting career, recently confessed to relapsing. Evander Holyfield, house in foreclosure, a veritable village of children from multiple mothers to support, fights on into his 50s. Most recently, Tommy Morrison died at 44, succumbing to AIDS, the disease he perversely dedicated his last years to insisting he did not have.
So it goes. And on Nov. 23, when he fights Rios, Pacquiao has his own date with destiny as our era’s most legendary, fading former-champion. “You know you’re finished,” Cannon wrote of Louis. “You knew it first. You understand what happened to you better than anyone. You’re the guy taking the punches. You share everything in the fight racket but the punches. You have no partners in pain.”
After Nike signed Pacquiao to an endorsement deal, in a puzzling marketing decision, Pacquiao frequently wore a T-shirt in training camp that stated: “Manny Knows.” It was never made clear what this knowledge was referring to. The meaning, like so much of boxing, was just left hanging there. At this point, I’m not even sure Pacquiao’s millions of fans around the world want to know the answer to the most pressing question concerning Pacquiao’s career and livelihood. The question itself is pretty obvious and it’s the same one all the great fighters eventually have to answer both inside and outside the ring.

Guys (Rios vs Pacquiao Live) is the (Pacquiao vs Rios) live HBO PPV fight events taking place in China. Manny Pacquiao vs Brandon Rios ppv-live fight (Rios vs Pacquiao Live) will be live (Pacquiao vs Rios Live) streaming broadcast via HBO Sports in the United States that the card [Welterweights: Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs) vs. Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 22 KOs), 12 rounds] would begin at the same time as all other HBO PPV events — live at 9 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. PT on Saturday.
“Same old story. All of ‘em on down. All the greatest — Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Tyson. All their careers ended with them either broke, busted up, or both. Ali had nothing left after Berbick and Holmes. Why did he take those fights in the first place? Nothing left. It’s criminal he was allowed to take those fights in the first place. A medical board gave him a license in the state he was in? Forget about it. Totally criminal. And you know something, he got lucky after they were over. That licensing deal he was offered that he got millions off of? Ali was lucky. Without that deal, Ali was bust. As a country, our track record with these guys isn’t pretty. Look at the rest of ‘em in boxing. Where do they all end up? I just hope that after Marquez, Pacquiao doesn’t get seriously hurt in his next fight. Or the one after that. I mean, he’s one more knockout loss away from just becoming another name, just another stepping stone for whoever is on the way up. And for all this guy has done in the sport? I mean, how ugly is that?”
“You left out the Church,” Leon cut me off and moaned. “You have no idea what kind of tithe is going their way now that he’s tried to clean up his act. Everybody’s hand is out. Manny can’t say no to anyone. The entourage. The charities. Lawsuits. Taxes. The fucking presidential run in the Philippines is coming up. Jesus. All those taxes on his real estate in Los Angeles and everything back in the Philippines. He has staff hired just to say no to people who come at him with open hands. Why do you think he has to keep borrowing those advances from Bob Arum? Even with all those massive pay-per-view paydays and he’s borrowing money? Boxing is just such a … it’s a wretched sport.”
Manny Pacquiao could make up to $30 million for his fight with Brandon Rios (Chris Farina/Top Rank) MACAU — Losing back-to-back fights, even if most of the world felt he won one of them, did little to hurt Manny Pacquiao’s earning power. Promoter Bob Arum said that Pacquiao is guaranteed $18 million to fight Brandon Rios on Saturday (Sunday Macau time) at Cotai Arena. With pay-per-view upside, Pacquiao could make upwards of $30 million. That’s not quite the $100 million that Floyd Mayweather walked away with after his win over Canelo Alvarez in September in Las Vegas, but it’s nothing to sneeze at and it’s made better by the fact that he won’t be taxed in Macau. Rios is making a guarantee of $4 million, and Arum said that Rios has little upside. The most surprising purse on the card may belong to flyweight Zou Shiming, who will earn $500,000 in just his third pro bout.

The Pacquiao-Rios welterweight showdown will take place at the CotaiArena in the Venetian Macao in Macau, China — where day is night and night is day in comparison to the United States. Macau is 13 hours ahead of New York and 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles. Putting on a major event overseas is hard enough, but it makes for a logistical headache when trying to get across the message to confused consumers about when an event in China will begin. While the card will start at the normal time American consumers are used to watching boxing pay-per-views, it will be Sunday morning in Macau. What to watch for in Manny Pacquiao’s return to the ring Saturday against Brandon Rios.

Rios and Pacquiao are already on Chinese time and preparing for a fight on Sunday morning, so that’s how they referred to it when making appearances on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” on Tuesday night U.S. time. That sounded alarm bells for the public relations team, which has taken great pains to remind them that the fight is Saturday night in the U.S.

We stared at each other for a second until Roach was interrupted and asked for an autograph and a picture with a family from one of a constant stream of fans inundating his gym. Pacquiao’s fame at this time, and by extension Roach’s, was so enormous that Roach himself had a reality television show with HBO in the works. Crowds waited for hours in the parking lots satisfied with just a glimpse of Pacquiao exiting his sleek black Mercedes. Entire security details were engaged to navigate his arrival before adoring fans at Wild Card for sparring sessions. It was rare not to see celebrities or television crews at his gym hanging around for a piece of the action.
Virtually every profile and story written about Pacquiao celebrated how he was different, what he had, and what he could still accomplish. He could be more than a champion. He already was. He was an icon to an entire country, an actor, a basketball player, a singer, a politician voted to public office in a landslide. Becoming president of the Philippines wasn’t out of the question. Yet few of them mentioned the cost, or what he didn’t have, or what he was losing. Those stories weren’t what people wanted to associate with a rags-to-riches feel-good story like Pacquiao’s.
In recent years, Roach’s fighters had run up a staggering number of victories and Roach himself had become, as the PR for his memoir announced, “the most famous white man in the Philippines.” World champions were lining up to train with him, sing his praises, and get on the gravy train. And while Roach loved the action and attention, everyone appreciated that he was always generous with his good fortune in an unusually humble way. My hunch about that feature of Roach’s kindness was that it betrayed an unusual trait, about him, mostly absent in the profession of boxing: Roach was the first to tell anyone that he wasn’t sure how long any of this was going to last. But it sure was fun in the meantime. Even then, I wondered how the scene would change after Pacquiao hung around the fair too long.
“He’s really broke?” I asked again.
When Roach noticed a few people had heard what he’d said to me, he spoke softer. “Sure. Those checks get split an awful lot of ways and he’s living as if he gets to keep every cent before taxes and the split.”
I tried to crunch the numbers on Pacquiao’s reported earnings compared to what money he would have actually seen. In the two years prior, Pacquiao had laid waste to De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, and Miguel Cotto. All were eight-figure paydays that promised even bigger paydays the next time he fought. Nobody had seen anything like this in boxing since the zenith of Tyson’s reign of terror.
At what cost? How much remains? Fast forward to Pacquiao’s life today. Back-to-back losses. Another training camp to prepare for another younger, dangerous opponent with an even more menacing, largely unspoken possibility hovering around him each and every day: This might be it. Even if he isn’t shot, most likely his best days are surely behind him, his earning power virtually guaranteed to drop dramatically. And how much is left anyway — any of it? Or is he just a Ponzi scheme? As staggering a résumé as Pacquiao has put together — surely enough to measure as favorably as Mayweather’s in many people’s eyes — he’s paid a far graver price for it, and there may be still more debt to accrue.
“You’re only going to retire from the sport when you’re ready,” Roach shrugged, raising a cup of coffee to his lips with a trembling hand. After Roach’s own boxing career had ended without earning more than $7,500 for a fight, he found work as a busboy and a telemarketer before reentering boxing as a trainer.
“You’re not going to retire when someone tells you,” he said. “Because Eddie Futch told me I needed to quit. I says, ‘Well, what’s the old man telling me that for? He needs to quit.’ I got angry. And, you know, I went against my mentor, my idol, the greatest guy probably ever I met in my life. But the thing was I was frustrated. I put everything into the sport that I have. I don’t know how to do anything else. Boxing, I put my whole life into it, and I got nothing out of it. And here I am, 27 years old, him telling me to retire. I’m crying in his office thinking, ‘What the fuck am I going to do with my life?’ I fought five more times. On my own. I lost four of the five — so he was right,” Roach smiled.
“Did you see this day coming,” I asked Roach. “When a fighter like Pacquiao walks into your gym that first day and asks you to train him. Do you ever think about how they’ll end up?”
“I was on such a roll there for a while as a trainer,” he said. “I hadn’t had a loss in, like, I had like 26 wins and one loss.
I thought for a moment. “And now your three big-name fighters, Amir Khan, Julio Caesar Chavez Jr., and Pacquiao all had major losses. Khan and Chavez Jr. left you after their losses. What happens after Pacquiao?”
“I’ve asked eight to 10 people to retire, in the middle of their careers,” he said. “Or not in the middle, but somewhere along the way. I don’t want anyone to end up like me, with a disease that I have to deal with every day of my life. Only one fighter I asked said ‘Yes.’ Everyone else told me to either ‘Go fuck myself,’ or ‘I’ll get another trainer and go on.’ I says, ‘That’s what you’ll have to do.’ If I don’t think you should fight anymore, I won’t train them.”
“Right now they say, I read in Ring Magazine, ‘Who’s In’ and ‘Who’s Off.’ I’m out right now,” said Roach. “You lose a couple title shots and, you know, your big guys are getting a little older and maybe a bit further in their careers, maybe on the downside of their careers and now, you’re trying to rebuild guys coming up, of course. But, I’m still doing the best I can. Right now, they think I’m out, but I’m doing my best to make my fighters the best they can be. That’s the way it goes, you know? That’s part of life.”
“Time is a vandal,” Jimmy Cannon once wrote. Joe Louis was Cannon’s hero and he watched Rocky Marciano beat his hero into retirement. Louis was Ali’s hero and, in 1980, Ali’s hero was pushed in his wheelchair to Caesar’s Palace to watch Ali’s former sparring partner, Larry Holmes, brutalize him until Ali’s trainer, Angelo Dundee, mercifully stopped the fight. Eight years later, in 1988, when Tyson fought an aging Holmes, Tyson’s childhood hero, Ali, was there to whisper in Tyson’s ear, “Get him for me.” And Tyson did, knocking him out in four rounds. Seventeen years later, on June 11, 2005, at age 39, Tyson, two years after filing for bankruptcy, was fighting the unknown journeyman Kevin McBride. He quit on his stool in the seventh round and retired from the sport.
Coming off consecutive losses and the longest layover of his career, Manny Pacquiao is looking to challenge rising speculation that his abilities — and career — are on the downswing when he faces off against Brandon Rios on Saturday in Macau, China. Consecutive losses suggest Pacquiao isn’t the dominant fighter he once was, but he’ll have the opportunity to prove otherwise Saturday against the dangerous Rios. Pacquiao comes in as a 4-to-1 favorite, which is a sizable spread until you consider that he has been as much as an 11-to-1 favorite against previous opponents.
Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO) lost a controversial decision to Timothy Bradley in June 2012 and suffered a brutal knockout against Juan Manuel Marquez in his last outing. It would appear the aging fighter has lost some of his famous speed and quickness, though he’ll have ample opportunity to prove otherwise against the slower (but more powerful), Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO). Rios is a hard-charging volume puncher that is known for his ability to wear an opponent down, so expect Pacquiao to take advantage of the straight-ahead attack by using angles and combination punching.

Fans would be able to see the same television pay-per-view experience they were accustomed to seeing. Everything necessary for a top-flight pay-per-view event is being accommodated in China and by the Venetian. In preparation for the inevitable Pacquiao fight in Macau, Arum promoted two smaller cards there in April and July. HBO televised both on its HBO2 channel, using the events as essentially dry runs for a major show. The two cards went off without a hitch, paving the way for Filipino icon Pacquiao to fight in Asia for the first time since 2006.
TV lineup for the Top Rank card from the CotaiArena at the Venetian Macao in Macau, China on Saturday night (HBO PPV, 9 ET):
Welterweights: Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs) vs. Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 22 KOs), 12 rounds
Featherweights: Evgeny Gradovich (17-0, 8 KOs) vs. Billy Dib (36-2, 21 KOs), rematch, 12 rounds, for Gradovich’s title
Heavyweights: Andy Ruiz Jr. (20-0, 14 KOs) vs. Tor Hamer (21-2, 14 KOs), 12 rounds
Flyweights: Zou Shiming (2-0, 0 KOs) vs. Juan Toscano (4-0, 1 KO), 6 rounds
Junior lightweights: Felix Verdejo (8-0, 6 KOs) vs. Petchsamuther Duanaaymukdahan (8-1, 1 KO), 6 rounds
To give them fight content for their programs, a slew of boxing stars were recruited to do interviews: George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Marco Antonio Barrera, Timothy Bradley Jr. and Mike Alvarado. They’ll talk about the fight as well as their experiences of fighting outside their own country. Bradley, of course, faced Pacquiao and Alvarado split two fights with Rios. Taffet, who is in Las Vegas this week, went so far as to create a three-column spreadsheet for the roughly 75-person staff working on the event for HBO, Top Rank and the Venetian. It breaks down the day hour by hour with the time in Macau, Las Vegas and New York.
The fighters on the card also went to Macau well ahead of time in order to adjust to the time change. Rios left his Oxnard, Calif., training camp Nov. 11. Pacquiao trained in the Philippines, where he was already on the same time as Macau. The fighters will box in the morning, another adjustment that had to be made in deference to the American pay-per-view start time. It has not been an issue for Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs) or Rios (31-1-1, 22 KOs).
“We are getting [Pacquiao] used to having two meals before the fight and I think that’s a big factor, as long as he gets those two meals in him it shouldn’t be too much of a problem,” Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, said of getting him ready to fight in the morning. “We’ll be ready to fight.”
Said Robert Garcia, Rios’ trainer: “The fact that we are fighting in the morning, it is different and we have never done that. It’s not only different for us but for everyone on the card and is new for everybody. One thing about Brandon is that he always trains at that time anyway. He is always at the gym at 11 and by noon he is already sparring and doing his work. So that is already something we do, so it could benefit us.”
Rios also said he is not thinking about the time change, just that he will be ready when the bell rings.
“It’s going to be different, but not really,” Rios said. “Once you get in the ring and fight you are not even thinking about, ‘Oh, it’s going to be too early for me.’ It’s in the morning, but to me, I’m just ready to fight, to get It on, to show the world what I can do when I’m in top shape having the best training camp ever.”
People say, ‘Fighting in the morning, how unusual.’ Yeah, it’s unusual, but ask yourself, ‘When do you have the most energy or the most strength? Is it in the morning? Or is it in the evening?’ Most people will say it’s in the morning. So that’s why we expect an even greater battle than if the fight was taking place at the usual time in the evening.

Manny Pacquiao will have a live streamed workout today from the Philippines, starting at 2:00 pm EST. You can watch right here on Bad Left Hook this afternoon.
Fighter of the Decade MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO has subjected himself to the longest and most intense preparation — 12 weeks — since 2008 when he moved up two weight classes and scored a TKO victory over Oscar de La Hoya. The dazzling results will be seen on this video of his workout with Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach at their Philippines-based training camp. Pacquiao vs. Rios will take place Saturday, November 23 and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®, beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.
Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO) hasn’t won a fight since 2011, when he won a back-and-forth battle with Juan Manuel Marquez that many felt he deserved to lose. He followed that with what most saw as a wide win over Tim Bradley, only for Bradley to get the nod in Las Vegas. In his bout in December 2012, Pacquiao was brutally knocked out by Marquez in their fourth encounter.
Brandon Rios: ‘The way I fight is why I have the wins and fans I have, and the reason I’m facing Pacquiao’
Brandon Rios talks about his style, his approach, and whether or not he’s letting his first pro loss get to him.
You’ve had tremendous success as a professional. You fought undefeated for nearly 10 years. You enter this fight in unfamiliar territory after falling to Alvarado. Will you prepare for this fight any differently than you always have? If so, how do you prepare so that you don’t completely alter approach as a fighter to the point that you’ve moved away from what has made you a success?
“I’m going to fight the way I always fight. The only difference is I have to train in a smarter way. I can’t train to fight the way I fought with Alvarado and other fighters I have fought. I have to train smart, train to fight Manny Pacquiao. I’m going to train the same way and fight the same way but in a smarter way, because I can’t change my style of fighting. I can’t change something that has got me where I am now. The way I fight is the reason I have the wins I have, the reason I have the fans I have and the reason I’m fighting the biggest fight in my career on November 23 in Macau, China.
“Falling to Alvarado in Rios vs. Alvarado II didn’t affect me at all, what affected me was training to the Alvarado I fought the first time at the Home Depot Center. That’s what affected me. I trained to fight hard, yes but to fight the Alvarado I fought before. When I trained for Alvarado the first time on October 13, 2012 I was confident and I was ready 100% for the fight. When I trained for Alvarado second time, I would say I was over confident because I knew I had hurt him the first fight I had already beat him. Therefore I believed I could do it again. That’s where I messed up because I didn’t really think he was going to change his game. I didn’t train for a different Alvarado, I honestly didn’t think he was going to change his routine. I trained for the Alvarado I had fought a few months back, that’s where I messed up.
“This fight, Pacquaio vs. Rios, it’s going to be different I am going to train for everything. I am going to train for everything Manny Pacquiao is going to bring and some. I’m not going to assume he’s going to come into the fight like the Pacquiao that recently got knocked out. No, I’m training for the best Manny Pacquiao, I’m training for the elite fighter he is. I can never underestimate any of my opponents because at the end of the day, they want the same thing I want. A win. Getting that win, I have to assume Pacquaio is going to come in the best shape of his life, because he’s hungry again. Manny Pacquiao wants and needs that win on November 23 just like I want that win. So like I said before, I’m going to train for the best Manny Pacquiao there has ever been. I will train hard like I always do. I will give the fans the exciting fights they love to see, and I’m sure Pacquiao wants the same thing. I will fight like the Brandon Rios my fans love to see, but like I said I will train smarter, I will fight smarter. The loss to Alvarado earlier this year was a blessing in disguise, because I lost the fight to the cards, a very close fight. On the other hand I won something else, I won the experience, the experience to never be overconfident again. To always train for all scenarios, and that’s exactly what I am going to do.”

When it comes to critiquing the sport of boxing, who’s better than former heavyweight champ himself Mike Tyson to give his opinion?
HBO Sports’ Jim Lampley sits down with Mike Tyson and talks about whether or not Manny Pacquiao, at age 34, is pushing himself too far, and if he even stands a chance to beat Brandon Rios in their upcoming fight. “Pacquiao, when he’s on top of his game, he has so much movement, so much lateral movement,” says Tyson. “Rios has a lot of spirit when it comes just as a warrior in his fights. It’s going to be an exciting fight, it’s going to be truly exciting.”

Pacquiao vs rios live, Manny Pacquiao vs Brandon Rios Live stream is truly worldwide because not everyone will be able to be in China. This fight is quickly becoming the attraction of the year, soon after Mayweather fought Alvarez. These two brawlers are not boxers that run away from punches so fists will fly, that’s for sure. Both of these fighters are working hard with Top Rank and HBO to promote this fight in the United States. Since the fight will take place in China, there must be more emphasis on promotion in the United States in order to gain Pay Per View buys, and that is exactly what will happen.

After eight frustrating years, four controversial fights, 42 contentiously scored rounds, with over 500 punches landed from more than 1,800 thrown, after two grueling hours of opportunity under the spotlight, on Dec. 8, 2012, Juan Manuel Marquez finally landed the punch of a lifetime against Manny Pacquiao. It happened with just one second left in the sixth round of their mythic saga. Pacquiao charged forward to land one final blow before the bell, and instead added his own momentum to Marquez’s immaculately-timed, coup de grace right-hand, which landed flush against Pacquiao’s jaw. On TV, when the punch landed, Pacquiao’s back was to the camera. The reverberations of the impact were only detectable through the sudden jolt of Pacquiao’s wet hair on the back of his head. For a minute there, Dec. 8, 2012 might have become boxing’s equivalent of Nov. 22, 1963, the day Kennedy was killed. One second Pacquiao, the 21st century’s most beloved fighter, was ahead on the scorecards and charging. The next he disappeared under Marquez’s fist just as the bell tolled to end round six. At first, arrestingly, it wasn’t clear just how far down Pacquiao might fall. The referee certainly saw enough of the damage up close that he never bothered to count. Then, it began to register on those watching ringside that they may have witnessed what amounted to a public execution in the ring. Pacquiao remained motionless, possibly lifeless, until his cornermen rushed the ring in tears, followed by a doctor. Marquez jogged away from his fallen opponent, fist aloft, leaping atop the opposite turnbuckle as the Las Vegas crowd detonated into hysteria, flexing his biceps in vindication for three previously contentious battles. Whatever battles Pacquiao had won in their three previous contests, Marquez had now, with perhaps fatal finality, won the war. But isn’t this a staple of wrestling, meant to fool? Since the punch itself had landed with such comic book emphasis, the traction of the unfolding human drama, along with reality, became unhinged and, for an instant, suspended. In confusion and disbelief, many people watching around me in a New York bar laughed in horror. As Charlie Chaplin famously pointed out, from a distance, a man slipping on a banana peel or stumbling down a manhole is funny. It’s something altogether different up close. And since Pacquiao had fallen face-first and remained motionless, almost fastened to the canvas, there were no cues.
Why? Because, of course, boxing’s not so well kept dirty secret is that, financially, most fighters can never stop. No matter how outlandish a fortune they’ve earned inside the ring and out, most greats not only never get ahead, few can even manage getting out from under. They never put much distance between themselves and where they came from. With few exceptions, they all end up desperately needing one more payday. And then another. And then another. Most are forced to hang around so long their endings are consummated by the uglier, more sinister punch that they all saw coming a mile away. Joe Louis, at 37 years old, was never blindsided by the physical punches that Rocky Marciano landed to knock him helplessly out of the ring and the sport. No, the punch he never saw coming and what set him up for Marciano’s right hand was debt — in his case, to the government. Louis owed the IRS $500,000 and had nowhere else to go and get it but back into the ring.
Nearly all the greats were forced to stick around for those last final beatings, the ones that did lasting damage to their souls as much as their brains. If “protect yourself at all times” is boxing’s most vital rule to obey, surely the most devastating blow in the sport is the one you do see coming, the one you’re simply helpless to escape its impact.
Why is it so many of boxing’s greatest heroes — Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson — were forced to stare down this last tragic fate and await their inevitable descent into boxing’s latest cautionary tale? In the so-called “red light district of sports,” the only jungle where, as Don King’s biographer Jack Newfield once pointed out, “the lions are afraid of the rats,” why can so few great fighters walk away undamaged with any money in their pocket? Will Pacquiao be any different? And why, despite the millions, should we expect him to be? Maybe in the sport of boxing, “cautionary tale” is too generous a title for a fallen champion: They end up just another punchline. Marquez was the first person in the world to understand the night was over. No matter how much anyone had paid to watch in the sellout crowd at the MGM Grand or the millions around the world watching on pay-per-view, they had to wait. We’d seen the punch; he’d thrown it. As the referee rushed over to the fallen man, time stood still, postcard-like, while Marquez gazed down at Pacquiao like an anxious, nervous kid staring at Christmas presents under a tree.
One of the oldest sayings in boxing, the first warning every aspiring fighter hears long before they’ve ever entered a ring, is that the most dangerous punch, the one to fear most, is the one you never see coming. While the cliché is certainly true at the start of a career, it rarely holds up toward the end. This is because almost none of the great fighters in history ever stopped after that punch — and the history of the sport suggests that few can ever escape it. Pacquiao, despite earning a reported $174 million since 2009 from boxing and endorsements deals, is no different.
““Jokes? There are no jokes. The truth is the funniest joke of all.”” — Muhammad Ali
It seemed possible that Pacquiao’s name would be the latest name added to boxing’s most sinister list. Death isn’t without precedent in the ring. It happened again only recently, when boxer Francisco Leal died of a brain injury at the end of October. A week later, on Nov. 2, at Madison Square Garden, Magomed Abdusalamov’s was so badly damaged after 10 rounds he suffered a blood clot in his brain that forced doctors to put him into a medically induced coma. Abdusalamov suffered a stroke soon after and, with the help of a machine, still fights to survive today from his hospital room.
But no one with Pacquiao’s visibility has died, let alone in a fight of the magnitude he fought against Marquez, one broadcast around the world. The first widely televised ring death dates back to 1962, with Emile Griffith battering the life out of Benny Paret until he collapsed into a coma and died 10 days later. An even larger audience watched Duk Koo Kim endure 14 rounds of punishment from Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, only to succumb to brain injuries four days later. With reporters in press row parsing “lifeless” from dead in most of their ledes, it seemed possible that Pacquiao’s name would be the latest name added to boxing’s most sinister list.
“I mean,” Roach sighed, “it was scary. But, you know, he got up. He was fine. He talked to me clearly. You know, he knew what happened. And you know, that’s part of life.” “Yeah, he laid there too long for me,” Freddie Roach told me this summer, back at his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. “He laid there too long for me not to move. I says to myself, ‘Is he fucking dead?’” And Roach certainly wasn’t alone in his reaction, based on the sound of Pacquiao’s wife, Jinkee’s, agonized screams from the front row in Vegas.
My first phone call after the fourth Pacquiao/Marquez fight was to filmmaker Leon Gast. Gast had been an extremely generous mentor and friend to me while making my first documentary about super bantamweight champion and Cuban defector Guillermo Rigondeaux, who had fought on one of Pacquiao’s undercards in 2010. It was the first time I’d ever witnessed an entourage anything like the one that Pacquiao had following him around. It was said Pacquiao had an entire country behind him, but the sheer size of his mob convinced me he also carried a good portion of the entire Filipino population in tow (and on the payroll). Even then, Gast had pointed out that the entourage posed a far graver threat to Pacquiao’s livelihood than any opponent in the ring. The Academy Award winning director of “When We Were Kings,” a film on Muhammad Ali, a movie that culminated in the “The Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire, perhaps Ali’s career-defining victory. Gast had been working for years on a Pacquiao documentary, similar in scope. Of course, Gast’s documentary and most others omit the aftermath, Ali cruelly silenced and imprisoned in his body by Parkinson’s disease. The film offered a coda where people discussed the consequences of Ali’s career on his health, but it didn’t let you see it.
And that was before Typhoon Haiyan. How many hands will be out now, and how can he refuse? Pacquiao has released a “statement to the people,” saying he will “send help to those who need it most,” and his adviser Michael Koncz told the Associated Press, “Absolutely, he is dedicating this fight to the victims of this.”
Gast, like the rest of the boxing public, had made no secret of the desire to see Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. square off in a fight destined to serve as Pacquiao’s defining moment. A week later, I interviewed Leon at his home in Woodstock, N.Y., where he’s currently at work cutting the Pacquiao documentary. I asked Leon if the fight that now likely won’t happen, the fight that disappeared when Marquez sent Pacquiao to the canvas, Pacquiao vs. Mayweather, could have been our generation’s version of Ali and Foreman in Zaire.
“But now we’re crying over spilled milk. Floyd doesn’t need it anymore and besides, I’m convinced [promoter] Bob Arum was never going to allow that fight to happen had Pacquiao survived Marquez or not. But Pacquiao sure might still need it.”
“Bigger,” Leon corrected, shaking his head. “There’s no question in my mind it would have been the biggest, most important fight since Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier fought in Madison Square Garden. I was there at that fight back in 1971. I know how big it was. The Fight of the Century doesn’t begin to describe what the energy was like to actually be there that night. Forget the money people throw around, Pacquiao and Mayweather had that kind of potential for something important.

The crowd (Pacquiao vs Rios live stream: Pacquiao Boxing HBO PPV), of mostly rescue workers, roared in appreciation. That scene (Pacquiao vs Rios live stream: Pacquiao Boxing HBO PPV) was one of the grand moments of Bush’s presidency. His confidence helped rebuild morale. No doubt, Pacquiao would have had the same impact had he been able to make it to the affected areas. Pacquiao is beloved in the Philippines, not simply because of his success as a fighter but because no matter how big he became, he never forgot that he was one of them. He is rich and famous beyond his wildest dreams, but he never forgot his early days as a pauper. He relates to the poor and needy and downtrodden as easily as he does to royalty.
Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO) returns to the ring on November 23 in Macao to face Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO) in what is expected to be an action-packed main event. On the undercard, China’s Zou Shiming (2-0, 0 KO) is in action; Evgeny Gradovich (17-0, 8 KO) defends the IBF featherweight title against Billy Dib (36-2, 21 KO) in a rematch; and heavyweight prospect Andy Ruiz Jr (20-0, 14 KO) faces Tor Hamer (21-2, 14 KO).

Manny Pacquiao will be working out for the media this afternoon in the Philippines, and you can watch the show right here on BLH.

Episode 2 of 24/7 Pacquiao/Rios debuts Sat., Nov. 16 on HBO which all leads up to their live pay-per-view fight on Sat., Nov. 23.

Pacquiao vs. Rios: Look At Pacquiao Mon, Nov 18, 2013 12:00 AM EST 5:52 HBO Boxing
Manny Pacquiao talks about the past, present and what he needs to do to win. Pacquiao vs. Rios happens Sat., Nov. 23 live on pay-per-view beginning at 9pm ET/6pm PT. Manny Pacquiao fighting to inspire devastated Philippines MACAU – Sports somehow have a way of helping to heal a nation that has been devastated by tragedy.
After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the return of Major League Baseball and the National Football League played a role in life getting back to normal for millions of very tense, uncertain Americans.
Earlier this month, Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines. More than 3,600 people died and around 2 million were rendered homeless when the storm hit land. Pacquiao was training for his bout against Brandon Rios in General Santos City in the Philippines, which was not in the path of the typhoon. His first instinct was to break camp and head to the region to assess the damage, provide support and try to develop an aid plan.
“It’s very difficult to stay away and not go visit the people who were affected by the typhoon,” Pacquiao said Monday (Tuesday local time) after a brief workout. “It’s terrible.”
The aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in Leyte, Philippines. But as much as his presence on the scene would have helped, he made the proper decision in staying behind. His bout with Rios can serve as a rallying point for his countrymen. Pacquiao is a congressman who represents Sarangani province in the Philippines. If he didn’t have a fight scheduled in a few days, Pacquiao would have been leading the rescue effort and providing emotional support.
One of the high points of George W. Bush’s presidency came a few days after the 9/11 attacks, when he visited the World Trade Center and grabbed a bullhorn to speak to the aid workers. Someone in the crowd shouted that he was unable to hear the president speaking. Bush responded by saying, “I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.” Trainer Freddie Roach had to convince Pacquiao to stay in General Santos and finish camp.
“He told me he wanted to go down [the other day] but it’s too close to the fight for him to take any time off and we talked about that,” Roach said. “He is focused on the fight still, but obviously it is a big distraction because it killed all of those people. We do talk about it in the gym, about how many people got killed in the storm and how many more have been affected.

“He is concerned about it, yes, very much, but I think we have him pretty much on track on the fight. He knows it’s a big fight and he knows it’s a must-win situation and it’s bigger than that because he has to win for the country also, not just his boxing career. He knows he has to win for the people and he told me that yesterday. They seem to be inspiring each other.”
Manny Pacquiao wanted to leave camp to assist his people, but fight night was too close. That’s where sports come in. Pacquiao is a national hero in the Philippines and crime is essentially zero when he fights because the country comes to a standstill. Though a boxing match won’t help people rebuild their homes or feed their families, it can serve as an inspirational moment when Pacquiao steps into the ring.
It will, for however briefly, take the minds of his countrymen off the disaster and focus it on something the whole country is proud of. Pacquiao will spend much of the rest of the year working to help the victims. He expressed thanks for the support from around the world, particularly the U.S.
“Being a congressman in Sarangani province in the Philippines, of course I’d first like to thank the government of the United States,” Pacquiao told Yahoo Sports. “They sent a lot of troops there to help our people, and that’s helped a lot. I really appreciate it. As a member of the house of representatives, we thank them for all their support, and to all the nations who have supported the Philippines.”
The fight will, as sports often has a tendency to do, galvanize people of vastly different cultures and backgrounds and focus them on a common goal. In this case, a Pacquiao victory will serve as a metaphor for a country that needs to fight back. The Filipino people need to get over the shock and awe of the devastating storm and rebuild their country. Pacquiao is motivated by the strength they’ve shown and by wanting to be an example.
“Am I confident for my fight with Rios?” Pacquiao said. “I am more than confident. Rios is bigger than me. Remember Goliath was bigger than David and yet David needed just one stone to fell the giant.
“I enter this fight stronger than ever. I have the strength of my country and my people coursing through my body. I fight for them, not for me. I fight for their glory, not mine.”
